The Alchemist’s Hydration: Crafting My Electrolyte Magic
The Need for Flow
When you live with POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), your body is in a constant battle with gravity. My heart races, my head spins, and in the high-altitude Utah heat, it can feel like my life-force is evaporating. In the medical world, they tell you to "increase salt and fluids" to keep your blood volume up. In my world, I call it Electrolyte Alchemy. It is the difference between surviving a flare and actually feeling present in my own skin.
The Ritual of the Vessel
I don’t just "chug water." To make this feel less like a chore and more like a choice, I create a potion. I use a specific tall tumbler (complete with my favorite The Nightmare Before Christmas aesthetic). I love the weight of it; it feels heavy and intentional in my hand, a physical anchor when my head feels like it’s floating away.
*The Base: Chilled, filtered water (the element of flow). It must be ice-cold to help shock my system back into a regulated state.
*The Salt: A specific electrolyte powder (the element of the earth). My go-to is Liquid IV. It provides that essential sodium-potassium balance that acts as a "tether" for my heart rate.
*The Flavor: I always reach for the Watermelon. To me, that crispness symbolizes Clarity. With that first sip, the "brain fog" begins to lift, and the world comes back into focus.
The Ceremony of the Sip
As I stir, I don't just see powder dissolving; I imagine the minerals moving into my bloodstream, grounding my heart rate and tethering my spirit back to my body. It isn’t just "medical maintenance"; it’s a daily ceremony of survival. It’s a moment of quiet communication where I tell my body: "I see you struggling, and I am here to support you."
The "Alchemy" Tip for Fellow Potsies
If you are navigating the "Dizzy Sea" yourself, remember that the vessel matters. Drinking out of something that makes you smile. Whether it's Jack Skellington or a vintage goblet, it changes the frequency of the act.
I’ve found that sipping slowly while practicing "Grounding Breath" (inhaling for 4, holding for 4, exhaling for 8) helps the "potion" work faster. In Utah, where the air is dry and the sun is fierce, this isn't just a drink... It’s my armor.
With love and light, Ashley
