About Me
About the Alchemist: Ashley Anderson
I am Ashley Anderson. For years, I wore the uniform of the system, witnessing the machinery of care from the inside. But I found that true healing doesn't live in a chart; it lives in the bones. It lives in the 'Strange and Unusual' corners of our resilience. I am an author, a survivor of the Dizzy Sea, and a practitioner of Mundane Alchemy. Here, we don't just 'manage' symptoms—we transmute them.
Life took a sharp turn when my own body began to mirror the shadows I once stood watch over for others. Today, I navigate the currents of POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), DDD (Degenerative Disc Disease), and the deep, echoing chambers of trauma recovery. I call this experience "The Dizzy Sea"—a world where the horizon is always tilting, and the nervous system is a storm that never quite settles.
When the traditional systems failed me and I was forced to step away from the sterile hallways of medical work, I realized a profound truth: my power hadn't been stripped away—it was being redirected. I stopped being a caregiver for a broken machine and became the Alchemist of my own existence. I traded the clipboard for a compass, and I began to map a way through the dark.
This blog is my digital fortress—a sanctuary for Strange and Unusual recovery. Here, we don't speak in the cold, detached language of a clinic. We speak the language of the soul and the bone:
Somatic Agency: Reclaiming your body when it feels like a battlefield, and learning to stand your ground even when the ground is moving.
Sanctuary Building: Turning even the most fractured space into a palace of safety. Whether it’s a motorhome or a corner of your mind, you are the architect of your peace.
Gothic Resilience: Finding the staggering beauty in the shadows, inspired by the atmospheric depth of Tim Burton and the quiet, grounded strength of a life lived with intention.
I do not walk this path alone. My Fortress is held steady by my partner, and guarded by our resident protectors: Conan, the observant Catahoula/Shepherd; Lilo, the velvet Pittie mix; and Yennifer, the leopard gecko and sassy matriarch who has weathered every storm by my side.
While my years spent within the medical system gave me a deep understanding of the mechanics of care, I am not a doctor. I am a survivor who has studied the biology of my own fire. The words shared here are a blend of lived survival and intuitive somatic support. They are meant to empower your spirit, but they are not a replacement for your own medical team.
I am a writer, a survivor, and a warrior of the unseen. I believe that home isn't found in the crown molding—it’s found in the safety you build within.
Welcome to the Sanctuary. Let’s make the struggle beautiful together.
With love from the shadows, Ashley
